Marketing Mayhem: Inventing New Foods (That No One Asked For)

I got this web ad today on the Flickr network.

Look closely.

Yes, that is PEPPERONI on a grilled cheese sandwich. I’ll let that sink in for a moment.

Pepperoni.

Grilled cheese.

Together.

I’ve spent enough time on a college campus to know that people sometimes combine dissimilar foods into bizarre chimera meals. Some of these things, like buffalo chicken pizza and Red Bull-based cocktails, have even gained legitimacy off campus. But does ANYONE really slap pepperoni on their grilled cheese sandwiches? Like, a real person?

And before you say it, I know that grilled cheese has some elements in common with pizza (cheese, bread-type substance). But that doesn’t make it OK.

But this is the poor man’s attempt at getting his charcuterie on! He’s all pretending it’s Brie and prosciutto! He might even go ahead and slice up an apple to stick in there!

  2. Reminds me of when I was little and my mom would make chili mac. The recipe is easy: take one part chili and one part mac, stir, enjoy.

  3. Webb — you ever watch “Semi-Homemade with Sandra Lee” on the food network? It was basically horrifying fake-food recreations of normal things.

Clip Snark — I’ve heard that referred to as American Chop Suey in these parts. Also, your blog is made of awesome.

    • Muchas Gracias. I like your name for chili mac better.
